Dit is onze laatste avond in Cairo. We kunnen het ons niet echt voorstellen, het lijkt alsof we morgen weer naar een nieuw, onbekend land vertrekken.
We weten dat dat niet waar is, want dit keer is er geen voorbereiding nodig op de basisvragen: wat is de munteenheid en de koers, waar kun je aan geld komen, wat is een redelijke prijs voor een taxiritje en waar laten we ons afzetten? Alles is ons bekend.
Hoe langer we van huis waren, hoe meer we ons gingen gedragen zoals thuis. In het begin zochten we sterk ‘het exotische’, daarna meer en meer ‘het bekende’ – tot onze eigen verbazing.
Voor we in augustus vertrokken, mailde een columniste me het gedicht Ithaca van de Griek Cafavy. De tekst gaat over de zoektocht en het terugkeren naar huis. Het is geinspireerd op de Odysseus, geschreven in 1911.
Ik wilde het toen al een plek geven op het weblog, maar onze site kreeg de nacht voor ons vertrek pas vorm, dus dat is er bij gebleven. Toevallig kwam ik het gedicht een paar dagen geleden opnieuw tegen, in een boek van Coelho.
Nu heeft de tekst veel meer betekenis gekregen, en vind ik'm nog mooier. Juist nu we naar huis gaan, lijkt het me een mooi moment om’m alsnog te plaatsen (een passage). Het is een Engelse vertaling uit het Grieks.
